Recycling at the Show

The Great Yorkshire Show is working with ReFood as its food waste partner and HACS for the responsible sorting of all other waste disposed of at the Show. Visitors are asked to use appropriate bins marked for specific types of waste.

Almost 500 tonnes of waste products are generated over the four days of the show and none of it goes to landfill. No matter what the material, it is either recycled or converted to energy for the national grid.

The two largest waste products are straw and food. With more than 8,000 animals on the Showground, more than 300 tonnes of straw is used with practically all of it being recycled. The fraction which can’t be recycled is converted into energy. Second to that is food waste. 140,000 visitors come through the gates during the four days generating more than 100 tonnes of waste food which is converted into energy.

Tree Planting

All year round on the Showground, we are always looking at new ways to increase our environmental efficiency. As well as effective recycling our Charitable Activities Team have received grants from the Woodlands Trust to plant more than 400 trees with the help of local schoolchildren.

Fodder Great Yorkshire Food Hall

Fodder is an environmentally friendly building with a sedum roof and doors made from recycled bottles. New measures include a change to paper bags and money back on glass milk bottles.
