Pole Climbing Competition
If you enter the Great Yorkshire Showground at Blue Gate you may be impressed (and slightly curious) about the two poles towering over the field.
The Great Yorkshire Show hosts the Great British Poleclimbing Championships every year. The contest requires entrants to climb an 80-foot pole as quickly as they can. Climbers use spiked boots or shoes, often individually crafted, and a strop to 'run' up the poles, whilst being safely secured by a safety harness and belay team. The quickest times can be as little as 11 seconds.
The competition is open to both men and women and there are two classes, expert and novice. There is both attendance money to be had (extra for early entrants) and prize money to be won on a daily basis. It is not essential that entrants attend all three days of the Show, if you are interested you could try one day, and if you develop a taste for it come back for more! The championship prize, on the final day of the Show, is £250.00.
Entries close on Tuesday, 4th July 2017.
